VON.x Town Hall Meeting: "Back to the Future"
General Session
Monday 5:00 PM
The VON Town Hall Meeting is back … with a vengeance.
When Internet communications was new, no one cared much what we did. We were not an immediate threat to any existing revenue streams or business models … we were cute … like a baby tiger cub just being born. The industry has grown up, untamed, and is now disrupting, disrupting communications providers, disrupting vendors, disrupting regulators, disrupting users. We know this disruption is ultimately for the public and private good, but folks always tend to be wary of disruption.
Because communications can now be delivered from anywhere to anywhere, over any transmission facilities, everyone is playing on everyone else’s turf and no business, old or new, is immune from disruption. But, we, as the innovators and entrepreneurs and vendors and providers and thought-leaders, across the spectrum of the communications world, need to understand one another and figure out ways to get along, so that we, as a community, may revolutionize communications and the capabilities of the Internet to maximize the utility and good, for us and for society. The Town Hall meeting, with respected advocates on all sides of the communications policy debate, come together to kick off VON, to build bridges, to understand where technology, business and policy are going, and to appreciate the ultimate value and the revolution that is occurring.

Demystifying WiFi QoS for Voice and Data
Thursday 9:00 AM
QoS for WiFI is probably the least understood, yet most needed technology in LAN deployments. With a new set of standards like WMM and 802.11e, combined with the traditional marking, policing, shaping and queuing required; understanding QoS for wireless can be a daunting task. In addition, wireless introduces indeterminate behavior by using a shared medium with varying bandwidth, numbers of users and unknown interferers. This session will provide background and a detailed description of how wireless QoS works and can be implemented for voice and data traffic.
Will a shift to WiFi require a re-architecture of the wired network?
What are the immediate benefits and risks in deploying new standards like 802.11n?

Redefining Hosted Media
Thursday 9:00 AM
“It’s all software these days”, is a popular statement being made by today’s application developers and service providers delivering process intensive IP-based applications. As a service provider, how do you choose what type of media server platform to use? What media requires hardware assisted functionality, such as DSPs, and what functionality can be kept as purely software on the server-based host? This panel will cover the metrics and rules in making the choice to build an application on a service-based host. Some areas to be covered include:
Will an “all software” media server scale to meet my application needs?
Should the application be limited to the server or will other network elements be needed?

Tossing the Digits to Add Anonymity
Thursday 3:00 PM
It’s not necessarily glamorous to talk about phone numbers, but it is interesting to discover that phone numbers have a degree of anonymity that is useful in some applications. With the decline of second line revenue, and some even eliminating their landlines altogether, the opportunities for these “tossed digits” can be a source of new income for service providers. This panel will look at some of the new applications that take advantage of numbers requiring anonymity.
• What are the applications taking advantage of this surplus of numbers?
• Does LNP play a role in enabling applications with tossed digits?
• What is the life cycle of numbers used for anonymity?

Security
Thursday 3:00 PM
While there hasn’t been the “Armageddon” of IP-Voice security catastrophes yet – there have been a number of attacks and compromises, most notably theft of services, on carrier networks. As such, significant risks remain, particularly considering the fact that business drivers such as IP peering and extending global reach via connecting through the public internet continue to grow, thus increasing risk and vulnerability. This session will discuss the threats that exist for carriers today and some of the approaches that can provide a comprehensive IP-Voice security solution.
What are the top security breaches carriers are experiencing today?
Will security affect the performance of quality or prioritization in a network?
Do new applications create challenges to the network infrastructure and securing communications?
